History

On 3rd December 1971, Ferrari Modena received an order from their UK agent Maranello Concessionaires for a right-hand drive specification 365 GTB/4 Berlinetta, to be finished in Rosso Bordeaux Dino (20.R.351) with Beige (846) upholstery

The 365GTB/4 was specified with air conditioning and supplied with five alloy wheels, delivery date noted as March 1972 on a copy of the original order form retained on file, dated 6th December. The original owner was Mr D Baker of Milwards Farm, Lewes, East Sussex, co-incidentally just a few miles from our showroom

Further correspondence on file details a letter to Mr Baker from S.P.Bealey at Maranello Concessionaires dated 21st February 1972, which states: ‘I confirm that the car we are to supply you is finished in Rosso Bordeaux Dino (same colour as Peter Stubberfield’s Daytona with Tobacco upholstery.’  Bealey continues ‘I confirm we will supply the car fitted with air conditioning, push button radio, number plates, seat belts and registered for 12 months, taking your 2+2 in part exchange at a cost to you of £3,750.’

The Daytona was invoiced to Mr Baker on March 7th 1972 for the princely sum of £10,040, allowing him £6,290 for his Ferrari 365 GT 2+2 (Chassis 13797) and was allocated its first registration ‘KPC 125K’

Baker was obviously keen to demonstrate the sporting prowess of his new Ferrari and entered his first hill climb in April of that year, the Bugatti Owners Club Sprint Meeting at Prescott in the ‘Class C Ferrari Handicap’. He would enter a total of seven Bugatti Owners Club Sprint Meetings in the car between April 72 and September ’73, achieving three podium finishes within his class throughout that time

By April 1974 Mr Baker had acquired a new 365GT Berlinetta Boxer via Maranello Concessionaires and part exchanged the Daytona as part of the purchase, a copy of the invoice remains in the file. It wasn’t long before the Daytona found its second owner, Mr Bernard Fosker of Kent, who part exchanged his 1973 Dino 246 GTS plus £1,100 for the car!

Bernard Fosker was the founder of highly respected Ferrari specialists ‘Foskers’ and the Daytona was kept within his private collection for the following fourteen years. During this time many Daytona’s came and went but this car remained. We recently enjoyed an entertaining conversation with his son Jeff who recalled his childhood memories of the car, including going on a family holiday to Devon sitting on the parcel shelf behind the seats! He also spoke of his father’s participation at the Brighton Speed Trials and multiple hill climb events, ‘We went everywhere in that car!’ said Jeff

By 1988 Fosker had sold the car to Mr Richard Wells of Surrey who continued to enjoy the car regularly, with regular maintenance performed by Foskers and Moto Technique, documented within the file. During his ownership the car was fully re-painted and re-trimmed, winning a first in class cup at a 2007 Ferrari Owners Club Concours event which remains with the car. In November 2014 Mr Wells passed ownership to his son David who continued to cherish the car as his father had

In more recent times the car has benefited from a full carburettor rebuild, distributor rebuild, transaxle service, overhauled brakes, new water hoses and various other jobs, the result of which is a great driving and correctly performing Daytona. The latest addition to its exhaustive history is the ‘red book’ Ferrari Classiche Certification which has just been confirmed and the book will be arriving with us imminently

With excellent provenance from new, original colours, known and well documented long term ownership/history and superb condition throughout, this 365 GTB/4 has to be one of the best examples offered on the market today and is supplied with aforementioned comprehensive history file, Ferrari Classiche Certification and reproduction tool kit. Fresh to market and offered from private collector ownership, this is one not to be missed
