History

The Ghibli was launched as a concept at the November 1966 Turin Motor Show and featured a sleek and futuristic design by Giorgetto Giugiaro who was a stylist for Ghia at that time. Powered by a 4.7 Maserati V8 with four camshafts and dry sump lubrication with either a five-speed ZF manual transmission or optional three-speed automatic transmission being optional

Performance was excellent with the engine producing 306hp, 0-60 mph time of 6.8 seconds and a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) and the first cars were delivered to clients in March 1967

The ultimate variant of the Ghibli was the ‘SS’ model that was introduced to the Maserati range in 1969. The newly revised engine benefitted from a displacement increase from 4.7L to 4.9L which resulted in an increase in power to 330 hp at 5,500 rpm and 355 lb⋅ft of torque at 4,000 rpm

In direct competition with its rival from Maranello, the new Ferrari Daytona, the Ghibli SS had a genuine 170mph top speed and was a true GT car. Just 425 ‘SS’ coupes were produced from the total Ghibli coupe production of 1170 cars

Our car was supplied new to Italy and whilst we are still researching the Ghibli’s history, we know that the car was registered in Trieste in 1978 to Martinuzzi Leopoldo. Within the file is a copy of the Automobile Club D’Italia identification card from Padova in 1979

Fully restored in Italy in recent years, this is an original 4.9SS coupe with manual transmission and is finished in Rosso coachwork with Nero interior. Restored to an extremely high standard and a great driving example. Further history to follow..
